What is the Building Analyst Professional course?
This course is based upon the Building Performance Institute (BPI) standards for residential energy auditing. The BPI energy auditor training course prepares individuals to understand the components of building science, including combustion safety, blower door testing, energy efficiency and heat transfer, and how to conduct home performance assessments, or energy audits. At successful completion of the course, students should have the knowledge to identify and prioritize potential improvements to homes, and provide homeowners with the information necessary to reduce energy usage and costs.
Prerequisites: None, but experience in building trades is helpful.
Audience: This course is ideal for home inspectors, HVAC technicians, general contractors, home builders, students, and anyone interesting in understanding the house as a system or seeking a career in energy auditing.
What’s Included: Two days of instruction in a classroom setting, two to three days of field instruction in Denver area houses with a maximum of 6 students, written exam, field exam, and course materials (see below).
Course Materials: Residential Energy textbook, Efficiency Revolution’s presentation materials, and applicable BPI Technical Standards.

Beginning in 2014 BPI made significant changes to the standards on which the Building Analyst exams are based, and retired the Building Analyst Standard. You will need to use the new standard to take your Building Analyst exams or re-certify. We’ll tell you all about the changes and prepare you for the new exams during our courses. Mark Rogers has been involved in the building performance industry for almost fourteen years, and has performed more than 1,700 energy audits and ratings. He has experience in Existing Homes, New Homes, Commercial Buildings, and Training. He was responsible for Quality Assurance on more than 10,000 energy audits delivered in Colorado from 2009 to 2011 for the largest public utility company in Colorado, and trains contractors for the Fort Collins Public Utility Home Efficiency Program. He has the experience to understand, diagnose, and recommend solutions for virtually any energy efficiency challenge imaginable in your home. Mark has several professional certifications which include:
- Commercial Energy Manager, which is awarded by the Association of Energy Engineers.
